The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) operates at various levels to serve its members and advocate for older adults. While you may hold an AARP National Card in your wallet, this does not automatically give you membership to your local chapter. Below, you can read about some of the differences between the levels of AARP.
National Level (AARP National)
AARP National is the overarching organization that sets the overall direction, policies, and priorities for the entire association. AARP National represents the interests of its members on a nation-wide scale, engaging in advocacy efforts, lobbying for legislative changes, and promoting initiatives that benefit older adults nationwide. AARP National additionally provides resources, information, and services to its members across the country through its website, publications, and national programs.
State Level (AARP Rhode Island)
AARP has state offices in each of the 50 states, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These state offices coordinate AARP's activities and initiatives within their respective states, with our state organization naturally being AARP Rhode Island. At the state level, officers engage in state-specific advocacy efforts, collaborate with local organizations, and offer resources tailored to the needs of older adults in their state. State offices often work closely with local chapters to support their activities and initiatives.
Local Level (AARP Local Chapter #4580)
AARP local chapters are community-based groups organized by AARP members at the grassroots level. Local chapters operate within specific cities, towns, or regions, focusing on addressing local issues, providing services, and fostering social connections among older adults in their communities. They organize events, volunteer projects, educational workshops, and social activities tailored to the interests and needs of their members. Local chapters serve as a platform for AARP members to engage with one another, advocate for local concerns, and make a positive impact in their neighborhoods. Although AARP Chapter #4580 is based in North Providence, RI, you do not have to live in North Providence to join.
